2021 U.S. Open: Matthew Wolff Has Wild Thursday
By Tim Letcher
Matthew Wolff had taken some time away from the game of golf after some struggles on the PGA Tour earlier this season. He returned this week at the U.S. Open and, in his initial 18 holes, he had a wild round of golf.
Wolff got off to a fantastic start on Thursday. Playing the back nine first, he opened his round with a birdie on the 10th hole. After a par at the 11th, Wolff birdied the par-4 12th hole, then the par-5 13th hole. Suddenly, he was 3-under par through four holes and in the lead.

He would par the 14th hole, staying at 3-under. But then, his round started going in the other direction. He bogeyed the par-4 15th hole. He carded a double bogey at the par-3 16th hole to drop back to even. Then, he bogeyed the 17th hole, falling to 1-over par.
But the roller coaster was just getting started, really. Wolff would birdie the 18th hole, his fourth birdie on his front nine, to finish at even par.
As he made the turn, it was more of the same for Wolff.
Like he did on his first nine, Wolff started out hot on his second nine. He birdied the first hole to get to 1-under par. He then birdied the second hole, getting back to 2-under on his round.
But, he slipped a bit on the third hole, recording a bogey. That dropped him back to 1-under on his Thursday round.
Wolff bounced right back.
He birdied the par-4 fourth hole, then carded another birdie at the par-4 fifth. He was back to 3-under par and in good position.
Wolff would par the sixth hole but a double bogey at the seventh proved costly. Wolff would finish his round with a pair of pars, leaving him with a 1-under par round of 70.
His card is very wild. Wolff had eight birdies, three bogeys, two double bogeys and just five pars. It was a wild round but through one day, Wolff is still in the mix at the U.S. Open.
