Each week on the PGA Tour, there are players who fare better than expected and those who fall short of what was expected of them. Here at Pro Golf Now, we call them winners and losers. Here are this week’s winners and losers from the 2021 U.S. Open at Torrey Pines.

Winners

More from Pro Golf Now

Jon Rahm – Two weeks after being forced to withdraw from the Memorial Tournament due to a positive COVID-19 test, Rahm got his redemption in a big way. He trailed by three shots coming into the final round but a birdie-birdie finish was enough to win his first major championship. He also shed the label of best player to never win a major.

Louis Oosthuizen – The South African seems to always be in contention at majors and this week was no exception. Oosthuizen led by as many as two shots on the back nine on Sunday but he came up one shot short, finishing solo second.

Harris English – Coming off of a dreadful finish last week in South Carolina, English made the cut at Torrey Pines, then made the most of the weekend. He shot 71 on Saturday and 68 on Sunday to finish solo third. It was his best-ever finish in a major.

Brooks Koepka – He shot 69 on both Thursday and Sunday but his 73 on Friday really took him out of the mix. Still, Koepka finished T4 in the championship he has won twice. Odds are he’s not done winning U.S. Opens.

Collin Morikawa – If not for a 75 on Thursday, Morikawa could have been holding the trophy on Sunday. He shot 67-70-70 to finish T4, another strong major championship showing for the talented young standout.

Losers

Bryson DeChambeau – The defending champion briefly held the lead on Sunday before a collapse on the back nine. His 8-over par 44 on the back side dropped him from first into a tie for 26th place.

Tyrrell Hatton – Many thought he had a shot to win this week. He shot 70 on Thursday and appeared to be ready to position himself for the weekend. But a 78 on Friday left him outside the cut line for the weekend.

Tony Finau – Another player thought to have at least an outside chance this week, Finau was never in contention. He shot 74 on Thursday and 76 on Friday to miss the cut by four shots.

Webb Simpson – A former U.S. Open champion, Simpson simply did not have it this week. He opened with a 79 on Thursday and followed that with a 73 on Friday. It was an early exit for Simpson at Torrey Pines.

Justin Rose – Another former U.S. Open champion that was never in the mix this week. Rose opened with a 78 on Thursday, followed by a 77 on Friday.
