2021 Travelers Championship: Top 10 power rankings at TPC River Highlands
Say what you want about Harris English’s backdoor solo third-place finish last week at the U.S. Open, but it’s hard to dispute he’s back to playing some solid golf.
English racked up 10 top-10s between 2019 and 2020 for an impressive career resurgence. It didn’t pay off with a win until 2021 when he opened the year with a win at the Tournament of Champions.
It would have been a tall task to continue the torrid golf of the past two-plus years. Still, two missed cuts and no top-20s in his next eight starts after Kapalua were surprising.
The former Georgia Bulldog did muster T-21st at the Masters. It began a run of six of seven made cuts that culminated at the U.S. Open and included top-15s at the Byron Nelson and Palmetto Championship.
The 31-year-old fired 68 Sunday at Torrey Pines, which was one shot from tying the low round of this year’s U.S. Open. He made three birdies in his last five holes and seven on the round.
It was his best career finish in a major, narrowly edging solo fourth in 2020.
English ranks 27th on the PGA Tour in strokes gained putting (.468). His ball striking stats are fairly healthy and his birdie average is 10th best (4.28).
English has made five of seven cuts at the Travelers Championship. He recored T-7th (66-64-72-67) in 2014.
“This golf course has a lot of birdies, but it’s a lot of fun to play,” English was quoted by ASAP Sports in 2015. “You have to put the ball on the fairway.”
