There are plenty of options from which to pick this week. Our staff writers have made their selections and you can see them below.
Abraham Ancer
Joey McCusker
Patrick Cantlay
Kasey Kuhrts
Bill Felber
I know there will be a lot of backing for guys who had bad Opens — Johnson, Koepka, DeChambeau — in what is supposedly a more relaxed atmosphere. I for one expect them all to continue to under-perform this week.
Mike Randleman
Patrick Cantlay was a bonafide All-American at UCLA by the summer of 2011. If you didn’t know him for terrorizing the Pac-12, you got to know him by his performances at some big events. A week after debuting at the U.S. Open with a T-21st finish, Cantlay fired a second-round 60 at the Travelers Championship to lead after 36 holes en route to T-24th. He owned the TPC River Highlands course record for five years until Jim Furyk’s incredible 58. Cantlay missed the cut at this event in 2012 and 2014 but has made some good cash in Cromwell the last three years. Cantlay posted T-15th (69-68-65-68), T-15th (66-72-65-69) and T-11th (66-67-69-65), respectively. The 29-year-old enjoys that he can play aggressively at this event.
Paul Casey
Josh Chandler
Tim Letcher
Casey has been close here before, finishing second to Bubba Watson in 2015 and 2018. Casey is playing well and I expect him to finally win at TPC River Highlands this week.
Bryson DeChambeau
Michael Ellis
If not for an ugly three hole stretch on the back nine at Torrey Pines on Sunday, DeChambeau had his sights set on back-to-back U.S. Open Major Championships. When DeChambeau is clicking on all cylinders, he’s a tough player to beat. DeChambeau finished T8 at this event in 2019 and is considered a favorite this week at TPC River Highlands.
Rickie Fowler
D.J. Cadden
We’ve seen a couple droughts broken this year and Fowler will be the next to grab his first win in a long time.
