2021 Travelers Championship: Hudson Swafford Does the Nearly Impossible
By Tim Letcher
Hudson Swafford had a unique scorecard in Thursday’s first round of the 2021 Travelers Championship. Some of it was good, some of it was bad.
The interesting stretch for Swafford started on the par-5 13th hole. There, he drove his ball in the fairway, then let his second shot get away into the rough. His third shot got him near the green and his fourth got him on. He needed two putts to complete his bogey six.

On the par-4 14th hole, Swafford had a much easier time. He drove his ball into the light rough on the left. His second shot went into a greenside bunker but he holed his bunker shot for a birdie three.
At the par-4 15th hole, good things kept happening for Swafford. He drove it in the fairway on the short hole, then pitched to about 10 feet. He made the birdie putt to get to 1-under on his round.
Next was the par-3 16th hole, where Swafford hit the green and needed two putts for a routine par three. He remained at 1-under.
But he ran into trouble on the final two holes of his first nine.
At the par-4 17th hole, Swafford drove his ball into a fairway bunker. His bunker shot went into the water, resulting in a penalty. After a drop, Swafford hit his fourth shot on the green, about 12 feet from the hole. He missed the putt and tapped in for a double-bogey six.
On the 18th hole, Swafford found more trouble. His drive again found a fairway bunker and his second shot went over the green. His third got him near the green and his fourth got him on. He needed two putts, once again, to get in. It was another double-bogey six.
If you’re keeping score at home, you’ll notice that Swafford went 6-3-3-3-6-6. That’s something that you don’t see every day.
