Talor Gooch is quietly having a very nice season on the PGA Tour. That trend continued on Thursday in the first round of the 2021 Travelers Championship.

Gooch is playing in his 24th event of the season on tour. He has made 17 cuts so far this season, with eight Top 25 finishes.

His good play started in October at the CJ Cup at Shadow Creek. There, he shot 70 on the first day, but followed that with three rounds in the 60s to finish alone in fifth place against a very good field.

Three weeks later, Gooch had another top-five showing. At the Houston Open, he carded a final-round 63 to jump up the leaderboard and into fourth place.

From there, Gooch hit a bit of a lull in his campaign. He missed the cut in his final start of 2020 at the RSM Classic. And he started 2021 with a missed cut at the Sony Open in Hawaii.

He did make the cut at the American Express (T21) and the Farmers Insurance Open (T48). However, he missed the cut at the Phoenix Open.

Gooch then had another solid stretch of golf, starting in Los Angeles.

At the Genesis Open, Gooch finished T12. Two weeks later, he finished T43 at the Arnold Palmer Invitational. Then, in probably his best overall tournament so far this season, Gooch finished T5 at the Players Championship.

Gooch entered this week having made the cut in his last five starts. In his most recent tournament, he finished T18 at the Memorial Tournament.

On Thursday, Gooch was solid all day long. He had three birdies and six pars on his first nine, followed by three birdies and six pars on his back nine. It added up to a 6-under par 70, which was tied for the lead when he finished.

Gooch is still looking for his first PGA Tour win. With the way he played on Thursday, that could come sooner rather than later.
