2021 Travelers Championship: Dustin Johnson Gets Into Contention
By Tim Letcher
Dustin Johnson is the second-ranked player in the world but he has not played that way recently. From time-to-time, he has seemed to find his game, and that was the case again on Saturday at the 2021 Travelers Championship.
DJ shot a 70 on Thursday, followed by a 68 on Friday to make the cut on the number. He was seven shots behind Jason Day through 36 holes and no one really expected Johnson to be a factor this weekend.

Then, Saturday happened. And DJ found something in his game that allowed him to have a big round. Big enough, in fact, that now he may very well be a factor on Sunday.
Things did not start exceptionally well for DJ on Saturday. Not that his start was bad, it just wasn’t great. He actually parred his first six holes of the day to stay at 2-under for the tournament.
But starting on number seven, Johnson found his groove. At the par four, DJ stuck his second shot about eight feet from the pin. He made the putt for his first birdie of the day.
On the par-3 eighth hole, DJ hit his tee shot to about 10 feet. He made that putt as well, getting to 2-under on his round.
Then on the par-4 ninth hole, DJ’s approach was inside 10 feet. He made another birdie putt for his third birdie in a row.
On the back nine, DJ would birdie the 11th to get to 4-under par on his round. However, he gave one back with a bogey at the 12th. But he bounced right back with a birdie at the 13th hole, getting back to 4-under on his round.
DJ finished his round with a birdie on the par-4 18th hole. That gave him a round of 65 and moved him up 49 spots into a tie for ninth place.
Johnson is three shots behind leaders Kramer Hickok and Bubba Watson. But if he can have another big round on Sunday, he could find himself in the mix for his first win since the November Masters.
