2021 Travelers Championship: Bubba Watson Chokes Late
By Tim Letcher
Bubba Watson appeared to be on his way to a fourth title at the 2021 Travelers Championship. But what happened down the stretch to Watson was unexpected and ultimately cost him another win on the PGA Tour.
Watson entered Sunday’s final round in Connecticut tied for the lead with Kramer Hickok. Watson had a bit of a slow start, parring the first hole before a birdie at the second. That gave him the lead, one that he would hold for a large part of the day.

As the final group headed to the back nine, Watson maintained a one-shot advantage and appeared to be ready to win at TPC River Highlands once again. He would par the first four holes on his back nine. But then, he ran into trouble.
On the par-4 14th hole, Watson drove it in the fairway but missed the green to the left. He was unable to get up-and-down, suffering a bogey.
Then on the 15th hole, the short par four, Watson drove his ball into the water. After a penalty, he chipped onto the green. But his 35-foot par effort missed and Watson suffered a second consecutive bogey.
At the par-3 16th hole, Watson hit the green, but was nearly 50 feet away for birdie. His birdie effort missed, leaving him about nine feet for par. He missed that one as well, carding a third straight bogey.
If that wasn’t enough to take him out of the tournament, the next hole would.
On the par-4 17th, Watson hit his tee shot into a fairway bunker. Then his second shot came up short and landed in the water. After a penalty, Watson’s fourth shot got him to about 15 feet. His bogey putt missed and he settled for a double bogey six.
A disgusted Watson finished with a bogey on the 18th hole to close out his round of 3-over par 73. He fell from first into a tie for 19th place.
It was an unexpected finish and one that Watson will likely never forget.
