The FedEx Cup playoffs will be here before we know it and the jockeying for positions continues all season long. We’re taking a look at those close to the cut line for getting in the playoffs and the subject of this article is No. 119, Francesco Molinari.

The 2018 Open Championship winner (and therefore, Champion Golfer of the Year) has not had such good fortune this season. Molinari has made 13 starts on the PGA Tour and has made just seven cuts. He has made the most of his opportunities, earning three Top 10 showings.

Molinari’s season started at the Shriners Hospitals for Children Open, where he missed the cut. He then played the Houston Open, earning a T15 showing.

At the Masters in November, Molinari had a 78 on Friday to miss the cut badly. That would be his last event in the 2020 calendar year.

In 2021, Molinari started his season at the American Express, where he finished T8. The next week, Molinari was T10 at the Farmers Insurance Open. Things seemed to be looking up for him at that point.

Two weeks later, Molinari finished 59th at the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am. But he bounced right back, finishing T8 at the Genesis Invitational.

Molinari next missed the cut at the Arnold Palmer Invitational, where he won in 2019. He also missed the cut at the Players Championship.

At the April Masters, Molinari made the cut but finished well back, in 52nd place. After nearly a month off, he missed the cut at the Wells Fargo.

After another month off, Molinari had a good showing at the U.S. Open, ending up in a tie for 13th place. But last week, he missed the cut at the Travelers Championship.

Molinari needs to get his game in order over the next few weeks to secure his spot in the playoffs. Another Top 10 finish might be just enough to do that.
