He would only play two more tournaments in 2020. Thompson finished 77th in the Zozo Championship, then tied for 15th at the Houston Open.
After two months off, Thompson returned to the tour at the Sentry Tournament of Champions. There, he finished T21. He stayed in Hawaii to play the Sony Open, where he finished T25.
His best finish of the year, so far, came at the American Express, where he finished T5.. He followed that with a missed cut at the Phoenix Open.
Thompson finished T34 at the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am, then missed the cut at the Genesis Invitational. After a couple of weeks off, he finished T34 at the Players Championship.
He had a T19 at the Honda Classic before finishing T34 at the Masters in April. The following week, he was T42 at the RBC Heritage.
Since that time, Thompson has seen his share of struggles.
He missed the cut at the Zurich Classic. He then missed the cut at the Wells Fargo. And he also missed the cut at the Charles Schwab Challenge.
Thompson made the cut at the Memorial but finished 64th. He missed the cut at last week’s Travelers Championship.
This is the case of a player headed in the wrong direction. Thompson needs to get some things figured out before he falls out of the Top 125.
