2021 FedEx Cup Bubble Boys: Austin Cook
By Tim Letcher
The FedEx Cup playoffs will be here before we know it and the jockeying for positions continues all season long. We’re taking a look at those close to the cut line for getting in the playoffs and the subject of this article is No. 122, Austin Cook.
Cook has not had a good 2020-21 season, with one major exception. He has played in 23 tournaments but has only made eight cuts.

His season started with a T52 at the Safeway Open. He followed that by missing the cut at the Sanderson Farms Championship.
Then came the week that has made his season. Playing at the Shriners Hospitals for Children Open, Cook shot 63 in the first round and followed that with rounds of 65, 67 and 66. That left him at 23-under par, which was good enough to get into a playoff that was eventually won by Martin Laird. Still, the second-place finish had Cook sitting in 12th place in the FedEx Cup standings.
He followed that by finishing T24 at the Houston Open. He missed the cut at the RSM Classic before finishing 2020 with a T63 at the Mayakoba Golf Classic.
Cook opened the 2021 portion of his schedule with a T47 at the Sony Open in Hawaii. He then finished T32 at the American Express.
Then, hard times hit for Cook. And they have continued.
He missed the cut at the Waste Management Phoenix Open. He missed the cut at the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am. He also missed the cut at the Genesis Invitational.
Cook missed the cut at the Arnold Palmer Invitational. And the Players Championship. And the Honda Classic. And the Valero Texas Open. And the RBC Heritage, the Zurich Classic, the Valspar Championship and the Wells Fargo. In total, he missed 11 cuts in a row.
That streak came to an end when Cook made the cut at the Byron Nelson, where he finished T71. But two weeks later, he missed the cut at the Charles Schwab Challenge.
Cook’s best showing lately came at the Palmetto Championship, where he finished T31. But in his latest event, he missed the cut at the Travelers.
Cook needs another big finish, or several good finishes, if he hopes to hold on to his current standing inside the playoff cut line.
