2021 Rocket Mortgage: Davis Thompson Has Amazing Round
By Tim Letcher
Davis Thompson is probably best known as an All-American from the University of Georgia. But on Thursday at the Rocket Mortgage Classic, he made his name known in another way.
Thompson, who is making just his third start as a pro, had not shown any indications that something like Thursday’s round was about to happen. In his two previous starts as a pro, Thompson was T35 at the Palmetto Championship and he missed the cut last week at the Travelers.

But on Thursday, Thompson was locked in. And it started from the very beginning of his round.
Playing the back nine first, Thompson birdied the par-4 10th hole. He followed that with a birdie on the par-3 11th. He was 2-under through two holes.
After a par on the par-4 12th hole, Thompson got another birdie, this one coming on the par-4 13th hole. He then parred the par-5 14th hole to stay at 3-under par.
Thompson continued his hot streak on the par-3 15th hole, where he rolled in another birdie. He would par 16 before another birdie, this one on the par-5 17th hole. That put him at 5-under par, which is where he finished his front nine.
His solid play continued, even after the first-round rain delay.
Thompson birdied the first hole to get to 6-under par. After a par at the second hole, he birdied the par-4 third hole, getting to 7-under and into the lead.
Thompson would par the next three holes to stay at that number. He then birdied the par-5 seventh hole to get to 8-under and into the lead by himself.
His hot round continued at the par-4 eighth hole, where he birdied to get to 9-under par. He would par the ninth hole to finish with a 9-under par 63. Thompson held a two-shot lead when he finished his round.
It was a magical day for Thompson. He hopes it can continue through the weekend in Detroit.
