2021 Rocket Mortgage: Roller Coaster Season Continues for Matthew Wolff
By Tim Letcher
Matthew Wolff has had an inconsistent 2021 on the PGA Tour. That trend continued, in a positive way, on Thursday in the 2021 Rocket Mortgage Classic.
Wolff’s 2021 has been quite the roller coaster. It started with a T40 at the American Express. But the following week, at the Farmers Insurance Open, Wolff withdrew after a first-round 78.

He did bounce back, finishing T36 at the Phoenix Open. Two weeks later, he was T64 at the Genesis Invitational.
The following week, Wolff shot an 83 in the first round of the WGC-Workday Championship. He withdrew after that round. After a month off, he was T28 at the WGC-Match Play.
Two weeks later, Wolff shot 76 in the first round of the Masters. After his second-round, he signed an incorrect scorecard and was disqualified.
At the Zurich Classic, where he paired with Collin Morikawa, Wolff again missed the cut. The pair shot 70-77 over the first two days of the event.
Wolff then took about two months off, including missing the PGA Championship, to get himself, and his game, together.
It seemed to work. At the U.S. Open, Wolff was better than expected, shooting 70-68 on the first two days before carding 73 on Saturday and 74 on Sunday. Still, he finished T15.
However, he went back in the other direction last week at the Travelers Championship. Wolff shot a 76 in the first round and missed the cut.
On Thursday at the Rocket Mortgage, Wolff was good once again. He shot a 4-under par 32 on his first nine, including an eagle on the par-5 17th hole. He followed that with a 35 on the front nine to shoot a 5-under par 67.
The roller coaster ride continues for Wolff, who remains one of the game’s most talented young players. When he’s good, he can compete with anyone. But when he’s not, he’s quite an adventure.
