2021 Rocket Mortgage: Rickie Fowler Rallies to Make Cut
By Tim Letcher
Rickie Fowler was in real danger of missing another cut on the PGA Tour. But a front-nine rally on Friday in the second round of the 2021 Rocket Mortgage Classic saved Fowler’s day and got him to the weekend.
Fowler has not had a great season on the PGA Tour. He’s on the FedEx Cup bubble, coming into this week at No. 118 on that list. Making cuts is imperative to his hopes for the postseason at this point.

He has already missed eight cuts in 20 starts this year. In fact, he had missed the cut in three of his last five events prior to this week.
Those went unnoticed largely because of how he did in the two events where he made the cut. After missing the cut at the Wells Fargo and the Byron Nelson, Fowler was T8 at the PGA Championship and T11 at the Memorial. However, he missed the cut last week at the Travelers.
This week, at Detroit Golf Club, Fowler had a fairly quiet round on Thursday. He made two birdies and 16 pars on his way to a 2-under par round of 70. He was tied for 56th after 18 holes and needed to do something on Friday to make sure he would be around for the weekend.
Fowler wasted little time in getting things going on Friday.
He parred the first hole, then birdied the second to get to 1-under for his round. After a pars on three and four, he birdied number five with a magnificent chip-in, getting to 2-under on Friday and 4-under for the tournament.
Fowler would also birdie the sixth and eighth holes on his front nine. He shot 32 going out, leaving him 6-under for the tournament and in good shape with nine holes to play.
His back nine was quiet, with eight pars and a single bogey. That came at the par-4 13th hole, where Fowler drove his ball left, was forced to pitch out, and could not get up-and-down from 100 yards out for par.
That left Fowler with a round of 3-under par 69 and a ticket for the weekend. He’s only five shots behind the leaders at this point, so anything is possible for the five-time PGA Tour winner.
