Tom Lewis has some golfing pedigree even though he has not had a ton of success on the PGA Tour. He’s trying to change the latter this week at the 2021 Rocket Mortgage Classic.

Lewis hails from the same hometown as Sir Nick Faldo. He’s named after his father’s golfing hero, Tom Watson.

But none of that has translated to success on the PGA Tour. In 44 career starts, Lewis has just two Top 10s. One of those was a T2 at the WGC-FedEx St. Jude Classic last year.

This season, Lewis has entered 22 events and has made the cut in exactly half of them, prior to this week. His best finish this season came at the Zurich Classic, where he and partner Thomas Pieters finished T8.

Prior to this week, Lewis had missed the cut in four of his last six starts. The exceptions were a T71 at the PGA Championship and a T47 last week at the Travelers Championship.

But this week has been different for Lewis.

In Thursday’s first round, Lewis made seven birdies and no bogeys on his way to a 7-under par 65. That left him tied for second after 18 holes of play.

Then on Friday, Lewis had a very consistent round. He opened with three straight pars before running in a 20-foot birdie putt on the 13th hole to get into red figures.

He closed his first nine with five consecutive pars. That left him with a 1-under par 35.

On his second nine, Lewis stayed consistent. He parred the first hole to stay at 1-under. Then, on the par-4 second hole, Lewis made a 10-foot birdie putt to get to 2-under for the day and 9-under for the tournament.

After a par on three, Lewis made another long birdie on the par-5 fourth hole. He was 3-under on his round and 10-under for the tournament. He was also tied for the lead.

Lewis would finish his round with five straight pars. He’s 10-under and, at the time he finished, sharing the lead with Joaquin Niemann.

Lewis is currently 161st in the FedEx Cup standings. A finish near the top of the leaderboard could change his entire season. A win might finally have him living up to his pedigree.
