Louis Oosthuizen has had an outstanding major championship campaign in 2021. That trend continued on Thursday in the first round of the 2021 Open Championship.

Oosthuizen started his 2021 major season by shooting 1-over par at the Masters. That left him in a tie for 26th place overall.

In the 2021 PGA Championship at Kiawah Island, Oosthuizen found himself in the mix to win. But Phil Mickelson would ultimately prevail, leaving Oosthuizen in second place, two shots behind.

Then at the 2021 U.S. Open, Oosthuizen found himself in contention yet again. He appeared to be on his way to victory before Jon Rahm shot 4-under par on Sunday to top Oosthuizen by a shot.

Despite not winning, Oosthuizen had finished well in all three majors. This week, he’s looking to do one better, and he’s off to a great start.

It didn’t start off like a round that would be anything special. Oosthuizen came out of the gate with pars on the first seven holes, staying at even par.

But on the last 11 holes, he was smoking hot.

It started with a birdie at the par-4 eighth hole. He then birdied the par-4 ninth to shoot a 2-under par 33 on his front nine.

The hot streak continued on the back nine with Oosthuizen carding a birdie at the par-4 10th hole. In the span of three holes, he went from even to 3-under par.

Oosthuizen would par the 11th and 12th holes before getting hot again. He birdied the par-4 13th hole, then the par-5 14th hole, to get to 5-under par on his round.

He would par the 15th hole, then would birdie the par-3 16th hole, getting to 6-under par. He would par the final two holes to finish off his 6-under par round of 64.

At the time he finished, Oosthuizen held the 18-hole lead. And, the way he has played majors this season, expect to see his name there all week.
