It sure is great to see Jordan Spieth playing good golf again. The 27-year old from Dallas has had a nice bounce back year, even before his first round of the year’s Open Championship.

Spieth opened up with a five under round of 65. He had hit some brilliant shots with his irons, notably on the par 3 sixth, and into the par 5 sixth, both leading to birdies. Spieth had a run of four straight birdies, as we’ve seen in the early groups this morning.

He added back-to-back birdies on 15 and 16, highlighted by draining a 25-foot put to get the limited crowd on their feet.

In his post round interview with Golf Channel, Spieth talked about how why and how much he loves links golf, saying that he’s loved it since he was there at The Open at a young age.

He also talked about some of the similarities between playing links and where he grew up playing golf in Texas. Talking about how much the wind can be a factor in his decision making, especially coming to what club and what type of shot to make.

Jordan looked comfortable because he felt comfortable. On the broadcast, John Wood, who is in Sandwich covering the tournament for Golf Channel, said that Jordan looked at him and said, “Feels like Birkdale, I’m making putts and you’re here watching me”.

John Wood was the caddie for Matt Kuchar, who was runner up at The Open in 2017 when Jordan Spieth won at Royal Birkdale. That’s not the type of quip we’ve heard from Jordan in recent years.

That’s how you know Jordan feels good. Throwing a bit of shade at John Wood for his past triumph, along with playing the best golf he has in three years, Spieth’s confidence is soaring back near 2015 levels when he won The Masters and US Open and finished 2nd at the PGA Championship.

Jordan Spieth will have a lot of momentum heading into Friday, at the time of this writing, he’s tied for 2nd. I’ll leave you with this, the last time he shot a 65 in the first round was…….2017, at Royal Birkdale.

Who won The Open that year again? Oh yea, it was Jordan Spieth.
