Dustin Johnson had an amazing run, resulting in a FedEx Cup title at the end of the 2019-20 season. But what many don’t remember is the trouble he had in the middle of last season, including at the 3M Open.

DJ had an inconsistent stretch of golf once the PGA Tour resumed, following a three-month hiatus due to COVID-19. He opened by missing the cut at the Charles Schwab Challenge at Colonial Country Club.

But he bounced back with a 17th-place showing at the RBC Heritage and a win at the Travelers Championship. Everything seemed to be back in order.

However, it wasn’t quite that simple. At the Memorial Tournament, Johnson shot 80-80 to miss the cut by a mile. And the following week, at the 3M Open, he shot 78 in the opening round, then withdrew from the event. There were tons of questions about DJ’s game at that point in time.

He quickly turned those questions into answers.

DJ came back with a T12 at the WGC-FedEx St. Jude, then finished T2 at the PGA Championship. He then won the Northern Trust, was second to Jon Rahm at the BWM Championship, then won the Tour Championship to claim his first FedEx Cup crown.

Now, DJ gets another shot at the TPC Twin Cities course in Blaine, Minnesota. He faces a situation that’s different than last year but still somewhat similar.

After winning the Masters in November, DJ has just three Top 10s in his last 13 starts. He has also missed two cuts in the span of golf.

Johnson would like nothing better this week than to play better than he did last year at this event. And, he would love for this tournament to spark a late-season run that will put him in a better position to defend his FedEx Cup title. He’s currently 18th in those standings but, hopefully for DJ’s camp, on his way up.
