Matthew Wolff has had quite an up and down season on the PGA Tour in 2020-21. He has seen highs and he has seen lows. He’s hoping to get back on the high portion of his journey at the 2021 3M Championship.

With all of the success that Wolff has had early in this career, it’s easy to forget just how young he is. Still just 22 years of age, the best golf of Wolff’s career is in front of him, not behind him.

That youth may have something to do with the ups and downs that Wolff has had this year. It may be hard to remember at this point, but he had a really great start to this campaign.

It started at the September U.S. Open. There, Wolff battled Bryson DeChambeau before finishing alone in second place. He followed that with a  T2 at the Shriners Hospitals for Children Open.

But the downward slide started shortly thereafter. Wolff finished 73rd at the C.J. Cup, followed by a T50 at the Zozo Championship. In his next start, at the November Masters, he shot 77 in the second round to miss the cut.

Wolff then took some time off. His next start came at the American Express, where he finished T40. The following week, he shot 78 in the first round of the Farmers Insurance Open and later withdrew.

He would finish T36 at the Phoenix Open and T64 at the Genesis Invitational before withdrawing again, this time at the WGC-Workday Championship, where he opened with an 83.

Wolff took a month off, then finished T28 at the WGC Match Play event in Austin. Two weeks later, he was disqualified at the Masters for signing an incorrect score card.

He and partner Collin Morikawa missed the cut at the Zurich Classic, then Wolff took nearly two months off.

After his break, he came back with a T15 at the U.S. Open at Torrey Pines. But the following week, he missed the cut at the Travelers Championship, then finished T58 at the Rocket Mortgage Classic.

But this may be the week during which Wolff bounces back.

His only PGA Tour win, so far, came at the 2019 3M Open. That year, he topped DeChambeau and Morikawa by one shot to win. He was T12 here last year.

Wolff will be among the favorites to win this week, as he should be. And he could very well do just that this week. But with the type of season he has had, he could also withdraw, miss the cut or finish well back in the pack. His game remains a mystery to everyone, including himself.

If Wolff cannot get back on track this week, he needs to re-evaluate everything he’s doing moving forward. The guess here is that he won’t have to do that when this week is over.
