2021 3M Open: Groups to Watch Thursday, Friday
By Tim Letcher
The PGA Tour heads to Minnesota this week for the 3M Open at TPC Twin Cities. The field is fairly strong, especially considering that many of these players were in England last week for the Open Championship.
There are some very good groups on Thursday and Friday that are worth watching. Here are the five featured groups for this week’s event.

Dustin Johnson, Louis Oosthuizen, Bubba Watson (Thursday, 8:23 ET; Friday, 1:33 ET) – The world’s number one player, DJ played well at the Open Championship last week. He’ll be looking for redemption this week in Minnesota. Oosthuizen seems to always be in contention and that figures to be the case again this week. Watson has quietly had a pretty good year on tour.
Stewart Cink, Cam Davis, Dylan Frittelli (Thursday, 1:33 ET; Friday, 8:23 ET) – Cink has two wins on tour this year and is having his best season in nearly a decade. Davis earned his first tour win just a couple of weeks ago and has a very bright future. Frittelli had a very solid week at the Open last week and hopes to use that as momentum moving forward.
Patrick Reed, Michael Thompson, Matthew Wolff (Thursday, 1:44 ET; Friday, 8:34 ET) – Reed missed the cut at the Open last week but is one of the top-ranked players in this week’s field. Thompson has not had a great year on tour but he enters this event as the defending champion. Wolff won this event in 2019 and is trying to regain that kind of form this week.
Tony Finau, Rickie Fowler, Sergio Garcia (Thursday, 8:34 ET; Friday, 1:44 ET) – Finau continues to chase that elusive second PGA Tour win. Fowler made the cut at the Open last week but would like to boost his postseason resume here. Garcia showed flashes of brilliance last week but could also use a nice finish this week.
Wyndham Clark, Hunter Mahan, Ryan Moore (Thursday, 2:17 ET; Friday, 9:07 ET) – Three guys who have struggled this season comprise this group, with all of them looking to make something happen so they can make the postseason. Clark is 72nd in the FedEx Cup standings and is in good shape for the playoffs. Mahan is 225th and likely needs a win to get in. Moore is 137th so even making the cut this week would help him.
