Collin Morikawa’s Celebration is Short as he Turns to Tokyo

Collin Morikawa proved that he is here and here to stay after his triumph at Royal St. George’s last weekend. It was his second major win for the 24 year old from Los Angeles.

He became the first player ever to win two different majors in his debut at that major. Last year he won the PGA Championship at TPC Harding Park and the 2021 Open last Sunday.

Often times, you can take a little bit of time to enjoy the fruits of your labor with The Open being the final major. However, with the Covid-19 pandemic that stopped the world in its tracks in 2020, the celebrations were cut short a bit as Morikawa will make the trek across the Pacific to compete in the Olympics in Tokyo.

The Olympics getting punted back to 2021 makes this year a particularly busy year in golf. All four majors have now been contested, the Olympics are upon us now, and we still have the Ryder Cup in September.

Morikawa will try to one up Henrik Stenson after winning The Open in 2016 and the taking the silver medal, falling short to Justin Rose, who win gold in Rio De Janeiro, Brazil.

If anybody is going to complete the two week parlay, it’s Collin. He’s playing so well right now, leading the tour in birdie average and greens in regulation and all the resilience you could ever want.

It would be regrettable to leave out the obvious about Collin Morikawa playing in this Olympics. That being his heritage.

You know it would be so sweet for him to win The Open in England and then fly out to Tokyo and win Olympic gold in a country that has so much history with the Morikawa name just two weeks later.

Collin Morikawa will be joined by Bryson DeChambeau, Justin Thomas, and Xander Schauffele as members of Team USA in the Tokyo Olympics.

If you’re unfamiliar with the format of Olympic golf, it’s mostly the same as a regular tournament. four rounds, no cuts, each country can have a maximum of four golfers. Coverage of the first round will start at 5:30 ET on Wednesday, July 28th on Golf Channel.
