Olympic Golf: Groups to Watch on Thursday, Friday
By Tim Letcher
A number of the world’s best players are in Tokyo for the Olympic Golf competition. Here’s a look at the top six groups to keep an eye on Thursday and Friday.
Sungjae Im, Rory McIlroy, Collin Morikawa – Im plays every week, so naturally, he’s in the field in Tokyo. McIlroy has had a largely disappointing season but could make up for that with a medal here. Morikawa is the Champion Golfer of the Year and is hoping to add Olympic Gold Medalist to his resume.

Paul Casey, Joaquin Niemann, Justin Thomas – Casey continues to contend in almost every start, he just doesn’t win a lot. Niemann is a very talented young player who could be a surprise medalist here. Thomas will be one of, if not the, best player in the field this week. If he’s on, a medal seems certain.
Corey Conners, Marc Leishman, Hideki Matsuyama – Conners represents the best chance for Canada to win a medal in golf. Leishman is solid and will not beat himself. Matsuyama is the Masters champion and would love to add gold medalist, in his home country, to his list of 2021 accomplishments.
Tommy Fleetwood, Shane Lowry, Patrick Reed – Fleetwood wanted to win the Open Championship, but I’m sure he would settle for an Olympic Medal. After two years, Lowry is no longer the Champion Golfer of the Year, but he would settle for Olympic medalist. Reed got in late here because of Bryson DeChambeau’s WD.
Abraham Ancer, Christiaan Bezuidenhout, Xander Schauffele – Ancer will represent Mexico and could certainly end up on the medal stand. Bezuidenhout has played very well against the world’s best this season. Schauffele never gets phased by the moment or his competition and this week will not be any different.
Garrick Higgo, Viktor Hovland, Cameron Smith – Higgo got his first win, in just his second start, earlier this year. Hovland hopes to win a medal for Norway. Smith is probably the best shot Austrailia has of winning a golf medal in these games.
