Paul Casey is Loving Every Second of his Time in the Olympics

Paul Casey has experienced a lot through his career in golf. 3 PGA Tour victories, 13 European Tour wins, top ten’s in majors, Ryder Cups, he’s been around the bend a few times before.

Nothing thus far has made the 40 year old representing Great Britain more proud than being able to don the title of Olympian.

As soon as he stepped on the first tee box at Kasumigaseki Country Club, some 20 miles away from Tokyo, in Kawagoe, Japan, Casey knew just how special this moment was.

He said, “I just felt really proud, it was the coolest thing I’ve ever done in golf, there was not one ounce of nerves, just 100 percent excitement.”

He would later add, “I’ve thought about this for long because you can’t count yourself as an Olympian until you’ve started your competition. It was brilliant but then I got down to business. This might be the only chance I have to win Olympic gold, there will be other chances for majors.”

Math will tell you he’s 1000% right. He’s 40 now, he’ll be 43 for the Paris games in 2024, and not to say he still won’t be able to do it, but he’s found some success over the last two or so years, and anybody that plays the sport knows how quickly that can success can drive off a cliff Thelma and Louise style.

There will be 12 majors contested between now and August of 2024, he’ll have plenty of chances to win his first major.

Ever since he set foot in Japan, Casey has said that this would be his greatest achievement of his career. He knows he’s playing with house money, so that’s why he’s having so much fun with it. I also think he has an excellent chance to bring home gold early Sunday morning.

So far Casey’s lack of nerves has paid off through one round, carding a four under 67 on the first day of competition. Casey looked pretty steady as he progressed through the course, going bogey free for the first round.

He, and the rest of the field are chasing Sepp Straka of Austria. Straka had the day one lead of eight under par in a spectacular round.

Paul Casey will start his second round at 10:25 AM local, 11:25 PM ET with Justin Thomas and Joaquin Niemann. Coverage of round 2 of Men’s Individual Stroke Play will being at 6:30 PM ET on Golf Channel.
