2021 WGC-FedEx St. Jude: Harris English Shoots 28 on Front Nine, Leads
By Tim Letcher
Harris English came to the 2021 WGC-FedEx St. Jude Classic with the FedEx Cup within his sights. If he can get hot over the next few weeks, English is in a position to claim golf’s biggest individual payday.
And get hot he did on Thursday. And in a big way.

English got things going right away on the par-4 first hole. He hit his drive in the fairway, stuck his second shot about eight feet from the cup and made the birdie.
On the par-4 second, English hit a poor approach shot, leaving himself about 25 feet for birdie. No problem, as he rolled that putt in from long distance to get to 2-under par.
At the par-5 third hole, English had no problems, recording yet another birdie. He was 3-under par at that point.
On the par-3 fourth hole, English hit his tee shot to about 10 feet. He made the putt, making it four birdies in four holes.
The streak came to an end on the par-4 fifth hole. There, English was only able to make a par.
However, he got back on the birdie train on the par-4 sixth hole. There, he rolled in a 30-foot birdie putt, getting to 5-under par in the process.
On the par-4 seventh hole, English hit his approach to about 15 feet. No problem for him on this day, as he made the putt to get to 6-under par.
English would par the eighth and birdie the ninth to finish his front nine. He shot a sizzling 7-under par 28 to grab an early share of the lead.
Things would slow down a bit for English on the back nine.
He bogeyed the tough par-4 10th hole to slip back to 6-under par. He also bogeyed the par-4 12th hole, dropping to 5-under on his round.
But he bounced back late with birdies on the 15th and 16th holes to get back to 7-under. He would finish also birdie the 18th hole to finish with an 8-under par round of 62.
English holds a two-shot lead through one round. And he can’t be blamed if he starts to think more about the FedEx Cup.
