The 2021 Wyndham Championship welcomes the PGA tour this week for the final regular-season event before next week’s FedEx Cup playoffs begin. The 156 man field travels to Sedgefield Country Club in North Carolina for an event that has been a mainstay on the calendar since way back in 1938.

Course horse Webb Simpson headlines a field that includes four of the top 20 ranked golfers in the world with Louis Oosthuizen, Patrick Reed, and Hideki Matsuyama, also set to take part. For many, this week represents one final opportunity to book a place amongst the 125 that will move on to next week’s Northern Trust.

Mr. Wyndham himself Webb Simpson (+1000) opens as the favorite this week with his remarkable track record at this event that includes a win here in 2011 and four straight finishes of 3rd or better in his last four appearances at the Wyndham Championship.

Hideki Matsuyama (+1300) and Louis Oosthuizen (+1400) are next up, and both come into this event exhibiting terrific form in recent starts. Matsuyama will be glad to have put the pressure of the Olympic games behind him and he returns to an event that he has two top 15 finishes at across his last three appearances.

Patrick Reed (+2000) closes out the top tier this week and he is set to tee it up for a fourth consecutive week after logging some serious mileage of late with stops in the USA, United Kingdom, and Japan all on his resume in recent weeks. Patrick is always live to win, but with the Wyndham Championship throwing up some long-shot winners in recent times I prefer to start this week’s card further down the board.

The Mid-Tier

Sebastian Munoz (+5000) should excel in an event that has seen an average winning score in the low twenty’s in recent years. The Colombian is the ultimate boom or bust performer who isn’t afraid to make birdies in bunches. Sebastian ranks 36th on tour in birdie or better percentage for the year, and he has two 4th place finishes in his last three starts with the most recent coming in his last start at the Olympic games in Japan.

I’ll go with another golfer next who shares two similarities with Munoz having played and finished 4th at the Olympics, and who also comes out of South America. That man is Mito Pereira (+5000) who has burst onto the PGA scene across the last month and a bit. The Chilean has recorded three finishes of 6th or better in his last four starts. Mito is a quality striker of the ball and it surely won’t be long before he records that first PGA win after registering three wins on the Korn Ferry Tour to earn his automatic promotion.

Ryan Armour (+7500) is someone who has shown some flashes of form in recent starts with a 6th and 5th place finish in two of his last four starts, what really sticks out about him this week though is his excellent track record on Donald Ross designs, especially at the Wyndham Championship where he has four top 25’s and two top 10 finishes in his last four starts. Ryan is someone who typically shows up in ‘birdie-fests’ and he is an excellent putter on Bermuda greens as well.

There were several performances that caught the eye during the Olympics and Rory Sabbatini (+7500) produced one of them after an electrifying charge up the leaderboard on Sunday resulted in a silver medal that could have just as easily been gold if it wasn’t for Xander Schauffele’s clutch approach shot on the final hole. Sabbatini will hope to carry over that performance into this week in order to keep any dreams of making the playoffs alive and he should do so with a great deal of confidence after recording some nice finishes at this event in recent times that include a 6th and 4th place finish in two of his last four starts at the Wyndham Championship.

I’ll add one more to the card this week with Sepp Straka (+15000) who was another that had a nice finish over in Japan after leading at the end of the first round before eventually finishing 10th come Sunday. The Austrian has performed well on Donald Ross designs throughout his career so I’ll take a shot with him in this spot at long odds.
