Rickie Fowler’s One Last Chance to make Playoffs at Wyndham
It’s honestly hard to believe that a player the caliber of Rickie Fowler is in the fight for his FedEx Cup Playoff life. Yet it’s been a full year and here we are.
Fowler last week was in the 125th and final spot for the playoffs, but not getting an invitation at last week’s St. Jude Invitational booted him down to 130th in the FedEx Cup standings.

The PGA Tour will conclude its regular season this week with the Wyndham Championship in Greensboro, North Carolina. Fowler desperately needs, at least a top ten at the Wyndham, and maybe some help from those around him in the standings.
Fowler as had too many self inflicted wounds this year. To say that this season has been a disappointment would be quite an understatement. He’s been cut 8 times this year, with only a single top ten finish, a tie for 8th at the PGA Championship.
Rickie Fowler has been one of my favorites on the tour ever since he got his tour card. He came in as this fresh baby face from Oklahoma State University with a ton of skill and potential galore.
He’s had his successes, but none of them have been recent. His last win came back in February of 2019 at the Waste Management Phoenix Open. His play has fallen off the table since then, and has yet to recover.
On the bright side for Fowler, is that the man in 125th, Bo Hoag, is only 26 points ahead of him in the standings. Which means a top ten could put him in position to squeeze himself in. The bad news is, there are 5 players in between him and the final spot, and the way Fowler has played this year doesn’t inspire a ton of confidence.
As much as I love Rickie Fowler and how much I believe in his golfing abilities, I’m also pretty realistic. My heart wants to say that he has a shot and can put together a great weekend to get himself into the Northern Trust next weekend, but my brain knows that’s not likely to happen because Rickie just hasn’t had it all year.
I’m resigned to the fact that Rickie won’t be playing next week in New Jersey, and you can forget about the Ryder Cup. Even though his odds are very long, I’ll still be pulling for him in Guilford County, North Carolina. Who knows, maybe the ball will roll for him, it is golf after all, you just don’t know.
The best course of action at this point, though, is to go home after the Wyndham Championship, work on his game, and prepare for the start of next season. We’re always fans of comebacks and redemption stories here.
