2021 Wyndham Championship: Rickie Fowler Will Miss Playoffs
By Tim Letcher
Rickie Fowler had a clear task this week at the 2021 Wyndham Championship. He needed to play well enough to rise at least five spots in the FedEx Cup standings in order to keep his season alive.
Fowler had a bit of a rough start in his quest on Thursday. He didn’t have an awful round, but his 1-over par 71 left him in need of a Friday rally if he was going to be around for the weekend.

On Friday, Fowler played the back nine first. He started his round with pars on the 10th and 11th holes.
But things started to go south for Fowler on the par-3 12th hole. There, his tee shot came up short of the green. His second shot got him to about 12 feet but he missed his putt for par and slipped to 1-over on his round.
On the par-4 13th, the downward trend continued for Fowler. His drive landed in the fairway but his second shot missed to the right of the green. He again pitched inside 15 feet but missed the putt. He was 2-over at that point.
Fowler would bogey the 14th hole as well, dropping to 3-over par. He would birdie the 16th hole but finished his first nine with a 2-over par 37.
He would need a rally on his second nine just to make the cut.
Fowler parred the first hole before a bogey on the second dropped him back to 3-over par. He did birdie the third hole to get back to 2-over.
But needing birdies down the stretch, Fowler came up short. He ended up shooting 72 to miss the cut and, almost certainly, to miss the playoffs.
This is a disappointing finish to a disappointing season for Fowler. He should be competing to go to the Tour Championship rather than competing just to make the playoffs.
Fowler needs to get his game together before next season starts. He should be in the prime of his career but as this season showed, he’s most certainly not.
