The the Tokyo Olympics, Rory Sabbatini seemingly came out of nowhere to win the silver medal. Now, he’s continuing to ride that momentum this week at the 2021 Wyndham Championship.

In Tokyo, Sabbatini rallied on the event’s final day. He shot a sizzling 61 to climb into solo second place, just behind winner and gold medalist Xander Schauffele. Sabbatini, playing for Slovakia, was the surprise of the event.

Meanwhile, back on the PGA Tour, Sabbatini has not had a great season. The veteran has started 24 tournaments this season and has made the cut in exactly half of them. He has four Top 25 finishes but just one Top 10 this season.

His lone Top 10 came at the Farmers Insurance Open in January. There, he finished in a tie for 10th place.

Sabbatini has struggled on tour lately. In fact, he had missed the last four cuts on tour prior to his Olympic experience.

Entering this week, Sabbatini needed to make something happen in order to get into the postseason.

He started the week at No. 145 on the FedEx Cup points list. Only the top 125 get into the postseason, so Sabbatini needed a rally.

Things started well for Sabbatini on Thursday. He had a round that included five birdies and just one bogey. It added up to a 4-under par 66, which left him in a tie for 20th place.

On Friday, Sabbatini heated up. Not to his Olympic level, but still a very good showing.

He had two birdies on the front side to card a 33. Then on the back side, Sabbatini had four birdies to shoot 31 for a total of 6-under par 64. At 10-under par for the week, he was tied for the lead when his round ended.

Sabbatini will need a high finish this week just to make it to the FedEx Cup playoffs. With two rounds remaining, he’s in position to do just that.
