Scott Stallings entered the 2021 Wyndham Championship squarely on the FedEx Cup bubble. Stallings would control his own destiny, something which came back to perhaps bite him at the end of his round on Friday.

First, the setup. Only the top 125 players in the FedEx Cup standings following the Wyndham will make it to the postseason. Stallings was right on the border prior to the event.

The three-time winner on the PGA Tour has not had his best season in 2020-21. He has made the cut in 15 of the 25 events that he has entered. He has five Top 25 finishes, including two Top 10s. His best showing of the year came at the AT&T Byron Nelson, where he shot 21-under par to finish in a tie for third place.

Stallings has rallied a bit late in the season, making the cut in his last four events. But he was still hoping to have a little cushion this week.

Things started well for Stallings at the Wyndham. On Thursday, he had an eagle, three birdies and two bogeys on his way to a 3-under par round of 67. He was tied for 41st place after one round of play.

But on Friday, things got dicey for Stallings.

His front nine went well. He bogeyed the third hole but bounced back with birdies and the fifth and sixth holes. He shot a 1-under par 34 on the front nine.

The second nine was more of a roller coaster. After a par at 10, Stallings bogeyed the 11th hole. But he bounced back with a birdie at the 12th hole to remain 1-under par.

He would fall back to even with a bogey on the 13th hole. After a par at 14, he dropped another shot with a bogey at the 15th hole. He was 1-over for the day, and 2-under for the tournament, at that point.

Stallings would get that shot back on the very next hole. He birdied the par-3 16th hole to get back to even par on his round and 3-under for the tournament. At that point, it appeared that 3-under would be the number to get inside the cut line.

It looked like Stallings had locked up the weekend as he came to the 18th hole. There, he drove his ball in the fairway. But his second shot went into a greenside bunker. From there, he played a tremendous pitch, giving him less than five feet for par.

But Stallings was unable to convert the par putt. He tapped in for a bogey, one that dropped him to 2-under for the tournament and outside the cut line.

Stallings now finds himself in an odd spot. He’s currently 124th in the FedEx Cup standings. He will have to watch this weekend as others determine his playoff fate. It’s something that could have been avoided had Stallings made the short par putt on the 18th hole on Friday.
