Webb Simpson made a big move on Friday at the Wyndham Championship, carding a five under 65. He did the bulk of his damage on the front nine.

Simpson had an eagle on the par 5 fifth hole, leading to streak of birdies that had him going out in 30. He birdied 6,8, and 9 as well.

It’s no secret about how much Simpson loves playing this tournament, for a few different reasons.

Firstly, Webb is from North Carolina. He was born in the capital of Raleigh, and went to school at Wake Forest University in Winston-Salem, North Carolina. The Wyndham Championship is played at Sedgefield Country Club in Greensboro, North Carolina, about 30 miles east of Winston-Salem.

“This feels like another home tournament for me. Growing up an hour and a half down the road. I love this golf course. I feel like my home course growing up, Carolina Country Club has some similarities, undulation, doglegs, got to hit fairways. And us player talk about a golf course that fits our eye or a golf course we feel comfortable on and I’ve always felt that way here,” Simpson said.

His love goes further beyond that, he used the name of the tournament for other means. He and his wife, Dowd named their 3rd child after it. Their daughter Wyndham Rose Simpson. I’ll be real here, the more I think of it, Wyndham is a pretty sweet name and very unique.

It has been a while since Simpson won this tournament, a decade as a matter of fact. It was 2011, and also the first PGA Tour win for him. Not bad to grab your first win so close to where it all started in the Tar Heel state.

Webb Simpson can play this week pretty much stress free. The 36-year old is locked into the FedEx Cup playoffs on this the final event of the regular season. Coming into this week he sits in 48th in the standings, putting him well clear of The Northern Trust threshold and some room inside the top 70 to qualify for the BMW Championship after that.

Webb Simpson has as good a chance as any to win this week as anyone. The field mostly consists of player trying to improve their points positions, or trying to get inside the top 125.

Simpson is -10 through two rounds, which is four shots behind leader Russell Henley at -14. He’ll tee off in one of the last two groups on Saturday.
