At this week’s PGA Tour stop, the 2021 Northern Trust, a total of 125 golfers will be in the field. But only the top 70 will advance to the next stage of the playoffs, the BMW Championship.

There are certain players who are guaranteed to make it to next week, no matter how this week goes for them. But there are others who will have to earn their way forward in the playoffs.

Here, we are looking for those outside the current Top 70 who could make a splash this week and advance with a high finish. Here are five candidates to do just that.

Seamus Power – He got that first PGA Tour win a few weeks back and he enters this week at No. 73 in the standings. He has been a hot player recently and seeing him advance to next week would not be a huge surprise.

Erik van Rooyen – Another player who got his first PGA Tour victory recently, van Rooyen has three Top 10s so far this season. He’s been inconsistent this season but is playing well at the moment and could rise from No. 76 and into the Top 70.

Adam Scott – He comes into the Northern Trust at No. 82 in the standings but keep in mind, he could have (should have) won last week at the Wyndham. Look for Scott to continue to play well and to work his way into the Top 70.

Roger Sloan – Another player who was in the playoff last week at the Wyndham, Sloan is hot right now. He could find himself in the mix again this week, which could bump him from No. 92 up into the Top 70.

Zach Johnson – He would need something really special to happen to rise from No. 113 into the Top 70. But Johnson is a multi-time major winner and a gritty player, so never count him out.
