The FedEx Cup Playoffs are finally here, and the top 125 players in the rankings this year are heading to the Northern Trust. Adam Scott was nearly ranked a lot higher after his performance at the Wyndham Championship and will head to the opening round of the playoff ranked 82nd.

Think about how many FedEx Cup points were on the line during the playoff. It was a difference of 333 for those who T-2nd, and Kevin Kisner who ended up winning. If Adam Scott would’ve won, he would’ve flown up to the mid-40s in the rankings, and instead, sits at 82nd.

It’s not all bad though, as he still earned 167 points, climbing from 121st to 82nd. Plus, he’s getting hot at the right time. We see this in sports all the time, with an underdog/dark horse/surprising team or player making a jump when the playoffs start because they are turning it on once the postseason starts up.

A win from Adam Scott at the Northern Trust could vault him to the top of the FedEx Standings.

He’s had some success at the Northern Trust in the past as well. In 2019, he finished in 5th, and in 2018 he finished T-5th. We know he can score and play well there. There are going to be two numbers to watch for him. What it takes to get to 70th place and what it takes to get to 30th place.

70th should be simple, as he is just 93 points back of JT Poston. Normally, jumping up to 30th would be tough. He is currently 583 points back of Si Woo Kim, who holds the 30th spot. However, there are a lot more points available during the playoffs. Normally, a win gets you 500 points. However, a 4th place finish would get you 540 points at the Northern Trust, with up to 2,000 points being handed to the winner.

24th would get him 148 points this week, which is likely enough to make it on to the next round. I think we are going to see better than that from Scott, as evidenced by the strong 5th place finishes back in 2018 and 2019. Don’t be surprised to see Scott make a bit of a charge, and settle somewhere around 10th place this week. That would earn him 300 points, jumping him to the high 40s or low 50s, dependant on how those around him finish.

Adam Scott is getting hot at the right time and should put on a good showing during the opening event of the 2021 FedEx Cup playoffs at the Northern Trust.
