2021 Northern Trust: How Matt Wallace Shot 79 With 3 Birdies
By Tim Letcher
Matt Wallace had a very interesting day on Thursday in the first round of the 2021 Northern Trust. Wallace had a little bit of everything in his round, both good and bad.
His day started with an errant drive, an off-line second shot and a bogey on the par-4 first hole. On the par-3 second hole, Wallace went long and left. His second shot there got him into a greenside bunker.

From the trap, he pitched onto the green, about 12 feet from the hole. He ran the putt past the hole and settled for a double-bogey five. He was 3-over par through two holes.
Things would settle down a bit for Wallace after that. In fact, he would par the third, fourth and fifth holes to stay at 3-over par.
Then on the par-5 sixth hole, Wallace had a breakthrough. He drove his ball in the fairway, then hit the green with his second shot. His eagle putt missed but he had an easy putt for birdie, getting back to 2-over on his round.
The success would end there for Wallace. He would bogey the seventh hole and would finish his front nine with a double bogey on the ninth. He shot a 5-over par 41 on his front nine.
For Wallace, the back nine would have a wide variety of numbers on the card.
He started with a par on the 10th hole. But on the 11th, Wallace suffered another bogey, dropping to 6-over par. He also bogeyed the 12th hole to drop to 7-over par.
To Wallace’s credit, he did not give up on his round. He bounced right back on the par-5 13th hole with his second birdie of the day, getting back to 6-over par.
After a par on the par-3 14th hole, things got worse for Wallace. In fact, he had his worst hole of the day.
At the par-4 15th hole, Wallace hit his drive way, way, way left. And his second shot went even further left. He was forced to take a drop, then hit his fourth shot into a bunker. His bunker shot flew the green, he got on the green in six, then made his putt for a triple-bogey seven. He was 9-over par at that point.
But again, Wallace did not quit on his round. He came back with a birdie on the next hole to get back to 8-over par. That’s where he would finish, with an 8-over par 79, a round that somehow included three birdies. Wallace withdrew from the event following the round.
