2021 Northern Trust: Matthew Wolff Wildly Inconsistent Again
By Tim Letcher
Matthew Wolff has had a wildly inconsistent season on the PGA Tour. So we should expect nothing less this week in the first round of the playoffs at the Northern Trust.
Wolff was, well, himself on Thursday at Liberty National. His FedEx Cup playoffs started with a double bogey on the first hole after his drive went left into the rough and he later landed in a greenside bunker.

But, Wolff being Wolff, he managed to do amazing things shortly thereafter. He parred the second and third holes, then birdied the par-3 fourth. He was back to 1-under par on his round.
However, he fell right back on the par-4 fifth hole. There, he hit his drive in the water, ultimately making a double bogey. He was 3-over at that point and completed a five-hole stretch of 6-3-4-2-6.
Wolff would birdie the par-5 sixth hole but would bogey the seventh and eighth holes. A par on the ninth left him with a 4-over par 40 on his front nine.
The back nine was fairly quiet for Wolff. In fact, it was almost too quiet.
He parred the par-4 10th hole. He parred the par-3 11th hole. Then he parred the par-4 12th hole. He was still 4-over on his round.
Wolff’s only birdie on the back nine came at the par-5 13th. There, he hit the green in two and two-putted from about 30 feet. He got back to 3-over in the process.
After two more pars, Wolff ran into more trouble at the par-4 16th hole. His tee shot went way right and into the rough, leaving him a difficult angle for his second. Wolff promptly dropped his second shot into the water. After a drop, he pitched to about 12 feet, then two-putted for another double bogey.
Wolff closed his round with two pars to finish with a 5-over par 76. When he finished, he was ahead of only four players and, more importantly, had fallen out of the Top 70 in the FedEx Cup point standings.
He will need to get his act together in a hurry tomorrow or his playoff run could be over really quickly.
