Sergio Garcia was hoping for big things heading into the FedEx Cup playoffs. But his first round at the 2021 Northern Trust got off to an awful start.

Garcia started his day at Liberty National on the back nine. His first hole, and the one that took him almost completely out of contention, was the par-4 10th hole.

On his very first swing, Garcia pushed his drive way right and into the trees. The shot was so far off line that Garcia was forced to take a penalty.

Garcia’s third shot went long and left, ending up near the cart path. And his fifth shot, from the rough near the cart path, went about six inches.

With his fifth shot, Garcia pitched back over the 11th tee box but came up short of his goal of reaching the 10th green. Laying six, Sergio was not yet on the green.

His seventh shot got him within about five feet of the cup and he made his putt for a quadruple bogey eight. A snowman to start the playoffs is less than ideal.

Garcia never really recovered from his terrible start.

He bogeyed the 11th hole and parred the 12th. He was able to birdie the par-5 13th hole but gave that shot back with a bogey at the 15th. He shot 41 on his first nine.

On the back side, Garcia had a bogey on the first hole and a birdie on the second. He would shoot 34 to complete his round of 74.

The good news for Sergio is that, no matter how bad he plays this week, he’s got enough points to advance to the BMW Championship next week. So while it’s never good to struggle, if one were to do so, this would be the time to do it.

Still, Garcia would like to get things right before next week, when a round like this could prove to be the end of his playoff stay.
