2021 Northern Trust: How Jordan Spieth Made Consecutive Triple Bogeys
By Tim Letcher
Jordan Spieth was seen as among the favorites this week at the 2021 Northern Trust. But through three days, his only real highlight was a sizzling round of 62 on Friday.
On Thursday and Saturday, Spieth was, well, average. He shot a 72 on Thursday and another 72 on Saturday. He was 7-under par through 54 holes and had virtually no chance of winning in Monday’s final round.

His Monday round did not get off to a great start. He bogeyed the first hole before carding pars on the second and third holes.
Spieth was able to birdie the par-3 fourth hole to get back to even par on his round. But he gave that shot right back with a bogey on the fifth hole. He would also bogey the seventh hole, dropping to 2-over par in the process.
But his Monday round fell completely apart on the next two holes.
At the par-4 ninth hole, Spieth hit his drive into the water. He took a drop in the left rough, then hit his third shot in the water. Spieth would drop again, and he proceeded to hit his fifth shot on the green, about 20 feet from the hole. He needed two putts to finish off his triple-bogey seven.
Spieth’s troubles continued at the 10th hole. There, he hit his drive way right and he was forced to take a penalty. After a drop, he pitched his ball back into the fairway. Then his fourth shot landed in a greenside bunker.
His fifth shot got him on the green but he needed two putts to finish. It was a second straight triple-bogey seven.
Spieth will still advance in the playoffs, there was never any concern about that. But he will not carry any momentum into the BMW Championship this week. He will need to get that fixed in a hurry, with a quicker than normal turnaround this week.
