2021 Northern Trust: Winners and Losers at Liberty National
By Tim Letcher
Each week on the PGA Tour, there are players who do better than expected and there are those who fall short of expectations. Here at Pro Golf Now, we call them winners and losers. Here are the winners and losers from the 2021 Northern Trust.
Winners
Tony Finau – The winless streak is over for Finau, who topped Cam Smith in a playoff for his second PGA Tour victory. Finau had last won in 2016 and, at times, it looked like he might never get over the hump again. But now he has, and he’s also in the lead in the FedEx Cup standings.

Cameron Smith – The Aussie set a course record by shooting 60 at Liberty National on Saturday. He would get into the playoff with Finau, only to fall short. Still, it was a big week for Smith, who is now third in the FedEx Cup playoff standings.
Jon Rahm – The world’s top-ranked golfer continued his amazing year with a near-win at the Northern Trust. He fell short on Monday but Rahm is in the mix every time he tees it up. He’s second in the FedEx Cup standings but he’s the overwhelming favorite at this point.
Tom Hoge – He entered the week at No. 108 in the FedEx Cup standings. But a T4 at Liberty National moved him up 60 spots and into 48th place. His postseason will last at least one more week.
Alex Noren – He started the week at No. 91 in the FedEx Cup standings. But a big week at Liberty National (T4) took Noren up 48 spots and into 43rd place. One more solid week and he could find his was to East Lake.
Losers
Adam Scott – After shooting a 67 on Thursday, Scott appeared to be in good position to be in the Top 70 and to make it to the BWM Championship. But a 75 on Friday ruined those plans and ended Scott’s postseason.
Tyrrell Hatton – Came into the week at No. 63 but then shot 72-72 to miss the cut. He’s also going to miss the rest of the playoffs after falling outside the Top 70.
Martin Laird – Entered the week at No. 65 but missed the cut after shooting 73-69. Thus, he dropped out of the Top 70 and, thus, out of the playoffs.
Troy Merritt – He entered the week at No. 69 in the FedEx Cup points, but a 72-73 showing left him outside the cut line this week. It also left him home for the remainder of the playoffs.
J.T. Poston – He held the No. 70 position in the FedEx Cup standings prior to this week. He then shot 76-77 to finish next-to-last and, as such, ended his postseason early.
