2021 BMW Championship: Collin Morikawa Goes Cold at Wrong Time
By Tim Letcher
Collin Morikawa entered the PGA Tour’s postseason in really good shape. But in the six rounds of the FedEx Cup playoffs so far, including two rounds at the 2021 BMW Championship, Morikawa has largely struggled.
Talk about bad timing. Morikawa entered the playoffs on top of the FedEx Cup standings. He was in the driver’s seat and controlled his own destiny regarding the postseason.

Instead of taking control of the race to golf’s biggest prize, Morikawa has struggled. Last week at Liberty National, Morikawa missed the cut in the Northern Trust. He fell from the top spot in the FedEx Cup rankings to sixth.
This week, his slide has continued. It started on Thursday with an uninspired round that included three birdies, a bogey and a double bogey. It added up to an even-par 72, which left Morikawa in a tie for 56th this week.
On Friday, Morikawa appeared flat again.
He was never really able to get anything going on Friday. On his front nine, Morikawa had seven pars but no birdies. He carded a bogey on the par-3 third hole after hitting his tee shot into a greenside bunker and failing to get up-and-down.
Morikawa also bogeyed the par-4 fifth hole. There, he was once again victimized by a greenside bunker, failing to get up-and-down. That left him at 2-over par, which is where he finished his first nine.
The back nine wasn’t bad but it wasn’t good either. Morikawa opened with eight consecutive pars on the back side before a bogey on the 18th finished his round. That left him with a 3-over par 75 on the day. He’s now in last place among the 69 players in the field this week.
Morikawa entered the playoffs with a chance to win the FedEx Cup. He’s still got a chance but he now has his work cut out for him.
