Hudson Swafford has spent most of the 2020-21 season struggling on the PGA Tour. But as he proved again on Friday at the 2021 BMW Championship, look out for him on the rare occasions when he gets hot.

His season has almost literally been all or nothing. Frankly, the numbers for Swafford this season are amazing.

Swafford has made 28 starts on the PGA Tour this season. He has made the cut in just 11 of those events. He has five finishes in the Top 25 out of those 11.

But he also has three Top 10 finishes. In fact, he has three finishes inside the top six. More amazingly, Swafford has a win and a runner-up this season.

That win came way back in September of 2020 when Swafford won the Corales Puntacana Resort and Club Championship. His 18-under total was good enough for the second win of his PGA Tour career.

Swafford then went 12 consecutive starts with not much production. That included nine missed cuts.

But when the Puntacana event rolled around again in March, Swafford was right back in the thick of contention. He ended up at 9-under par that week, which was good enough for a tie for sixth place.

Fast forward about three months to South Carolina, where Swafford was in the mix again. He finished T2 at the Palmetto Championship, another strong showing.

He entered the playoffs in 56th place in the FedEx Cup standings.

But he’s trying to make a run at East Lake with his play this week. Swafford shot 67 on Thursday to sit in a tie for seventh place overnight. Then on Friday, he got off to a fast start and took the lead at one point. He shot a 66 and, when he finished, was tied for fifth.

For Swafford, advancing to East Lake would be quite an accomplishment. But as he has proven all season, when he’s hot, he can contend.
