2021 BMW Championship: Winners and Losers
By Tim Letcher
Each week on the PGA Tour, there are players who play better than expected and those who fall short of expectations. Here at Pro Golf Now, we call them winners and losers. Here are the winners and losers from this week’s 2021 BMW Championship.
Winners
Patrick Cantlay – He looked Bryson DeChambeau in the eye and held him off on the sixth hole of a playoff. Cantlay won for the third time this season and will take the FedEx Cup points lead into next week’s Tour Championship.

Bryson DeChambeau – Sure, he didn’t win. But he was the best player almost all week long. Love him or hate him, DeChambeau is committed to his style of play and, much of the time, it works. He’s got a shot at golf’s biggest prize next week, entering the Tour Championship in third place.
Erik van Rooyen – Not that long ago, van Rooyen was on the outside looking in at the playoffs. Now, he’s on his way to the Tour Championship. He rallied from 45th place to 27th this week and will get to go to East Lake next week.
Sergio Garcia – He came into the week in 44th position but his T6 at the BMW got him into the Tour Championship, in the 28th position. It’s been a good season overall for Sergio and this trip is well-deserved.
Sungjae Im – His solo third place finish this week moved him from 25th to 12th in the FedEx Cup standings. Im plays nearly every week, or so it seems, and that will include the Tour Championship this season.
Losers
K.H. Lee – After four birdies in five holes, Lee was in position to make the Tour Championship. But a bogey on the 18th hole left him in 31st place and out of play next week.
Charley Hoffman – He entered the week in 29th place but he didn’t have the best week of his season, by any means, and he missed advancing to next week’s play.
Max Homa – He was holding the 30th spot heading into the week but Homa did not have his best this season. Three rounds in the 70s, when scoring was very low, left him in a tie for 63rd and out of the postseason.
Collin Morikawa – After not playing well last week, Morikawa did not have it again this week. He tied for 63rd and has fallen from first to 11th in the FedEx Cup standings in two weeks.
Phil Mickelson – For two days this weekend, he looked OK. On the other two days, Mickelson shot 77 (Friday) and 74 (Sunday) to finish in a tie for last. His season is over but keep in mind, he did win the PGA.
