Fantasy Golf: Fortinet Championship DFS Player Picks
By Hans Geevers
After a one week absence, the PGA Tour returns to the golf schedule with the Fortinet Championship. A quality field of talented golfers will travel to the Silverado Resort and Spa in Napa Valley, California looking to capture a win in the first event on the new season. Who will win this week? Well, I will attempt to answer that question as I provide you my favorite fantasy golf/DFS player picks for the Fortinet Championship!

Before I discuss my fantasy golf player selections I wanted to emphasize that the purpose of this article is not to provide an exact lineup for a specific fantasy provider. Having stated that, this article will provide multiple player options in an effort to assist the reader in generating a unique lineup that will hopefully have the potential to win a GPP (guaranteed prize pool) contest!
*The 2021 Fortinet Championship was previously known as the Safeway Open from 2016-2020.
Here are my fantasy golf/DFS player picks for the 2021 Fortinet Championship!
Hudson Swafford
In my opinion, Hudson Swafford arrives at the 2021 Fortinet Championship playing far superior golf to anyone else in this week’s field. Let’s take a look at the relevant data to better shed light on my previous statement. In relation to this week’s current listed 2021 Fortinet Championship field, in the last eight rounds played on the PGA Tour, Swafford ranks first in GIR (greens in regulation), tenth in strokes gained approach, and third in strokes gained ball striking.
Hudson Swafford also checks the box when it comes to recent tournament results on the PGA Tour. Swafford arrives at this week’s event on the heels of two consecutive top 17 finishes, including an 11th place result at the 2021 Northern Trust last month.
Harold Varner III
Varner III has three top 12 finishes in his last five tournaments played on the PGA Tour, including a 12th place result at the 2021 BMW Championship two weeks ago. Varner III also finished 14th at the 2018 Safeway Open.
Harold Varner III also checks the box for me when it comes to key player statistics. In relation to this week’s current listed Fortinet Championship field, in the last eight rounds played on the PGA Tour, Harold Varner III ranks third in GIR (greens in regulation), ninth in strokes gained approach, seventh in strokes gained tee to green, and 11th in bogey avoidance.
Doug Ghim
Ghim fired a first round 66 at the 2021 John Deere Classic in July en route to an eventual 18th place finish. I also like the fact that Ghim has played well at this week’s PGA Tour event previously. Doug Ghim finished 14th at the 2020 Safeway Open.
Harry Higgs
The 29 year old American has accumulated two top 16 finishes in his last three tournaments played on the PGA Tour, including a 15th place result at the 2021 Wyndham Championship last month.
In relation to this week’s current listed Fortinet Championship field, in the last 12 rounds played on the PGA Tour, Higgs ranks 14th in three putt avoidance, tenth in birdie or better percentage, and 13th in strokes gained putting.
It should also be noted that Harry Higgs finished second at the 2020 Safeway Open.
Additional players I like this week: Chez Reavie: Patrick Rodgers: Brian Stuard.
