The Ryder Cup competition between Europe and the United States begins this week at Whistling Straits Golf Course in Sheboygan, Wisconsin. The top 12 players from each side will meet with the winner taking home one of the most coveted trophies in golf.

As the teams prepare for competition, we will be doing the same by previewing the players in this year’s event. Today, we look at Team Europe’s Bernd Wiesberger.

More from Pro Golf Now

Ryder Cup experience – This will be Wiesberger’s first appearance in the Ryder Cup. He has previous experience in the World Cup, the Royal Trophy and the EurAsia Cup.

Worldwide experience – While Wiesberger is not well-known in the United States, he has been a solid player in Europe for many years. He has won eight times on the European Tour and has four other worldwide wins to his credit. His most recent victory came at the Made In HimmerLand tournament in May, where he beat the field by five shots.

What to expect – The best news for Wiesberger is that he will be surrounded by not only veterans but veterans who have had great success in this event. It would be easy to see someone like Ian Poulter or Sergio Garcia take Wiesberger under their wing for the week.

Also, at 35 years old, Wiesberger is a Ryder Cup rookie but has been playing against the world’s best for many years. He’s not likely to be intimidated if he has to face Dustin Johnson, Brooks Koepka or any of the American players. However, he is the lowest-ranked player in the competition, currently at No. 61 in the Official World Golf Rankings.

Wiesberger will likely serve as one of those players who just fills out the lineup for captain Padraig Harrington. Don’t expect him to be a major contributor to the European cause. But, as has happened in Ryder Cup play before, don’t count him out if he turns out to be the hot hand at Whistling Straits.
