The Ryder Cup competition between Europe and the United States begins this week at Whistling Straits Golf Course in Sheboygan, Wisconsin. The top 12 players from each side will meet with the winner taking home one of the most coveted trophies in golf.
As the teams prepare for competition, we will be doing the same by previewing the players in this year’s event. Today, we look at Team Europe’s Shane Lowry.
Ryder Cup experience – This will be Lowry’s first Ryder Cup appearance. He has represented Ireland in the World Cup three times and represented Europe in the EurAsia Cup in 2016
Worldwide experience – Lowry has five wins as a pro but he has made them count. His most significant win came at the 2019 Open Championship at Royal Portrush. That same year, Lowry won the Abu Dhabi HSBC Championship. And in 2015, he won the WGC-Bridgestone Invitational.
What to expect – Lowry is much more than your typical Ryder Cup rookie. This is a player with significant experience and confidence. Lowry will be expected to play a key role for captain Padraig Harrington and the European side.
Like many of the European players, Lowry plays with a lot of emotion. That makes the Ryder Cup a perfect event for him and one in which he should thrive.
The expectation is that Harrington will find a comfortable pairing for Lowry and ride it all weekend long. Lowry will be expected to fit right in with all of the European veterans and will be expected to contribute heavily to the Euros cause.
Team chemistry has been the hallmark of the European team’s success over the past 20 years. Lowry fits perfectly into that, as he is well-liked and respected by the other members of the team. Expect Lowry to become a key piece of the European team this year and in Ryder Cups to come.
