The matches for the first session of the 2021 Ryder Cup are set, and things will get started with a bang. Here’s a breakdown of each of Friday’s foursome (alternate shot) matches.

Sergio Garcia/Jon Rahm vs. Jordan Spieth/Justin Thomas – The all-time leader in Ryder Cup points, Garcia, pairs with his fellow Spaniard and world number one Jon Rahm. They face what may turn out to be America’s best pairing, good friends Spieth and Thomas. This is quite a way to kick off this event. Look for this one to go down to the wire.

Prediction: Match is halved

Paul Casey/Viktor Hovland vs. Dustin Johnson/Collin Morikawa – The veteran Casey partners with the rookie Hovland against former world number one DJ and two-time major winner Morikawa. This one seems to favor the Americans, especially if DJ can drive it in the fairway and Morikawa is his normal self with the irons.

Prediction: Americans win 3&1

Matthew Fitzpatrick/Lee Westwood vs. Daniel Berger/Brooks Koepka – Fitzpatrick had a tough time in his first Ryder Cup and he’s looking for redemption this time around. He partners with the veteran Westwood, who should provide a calming influence. Berger is also a Ryder Cup rookie and he pairs with Koepka, who has fared well in Ryder Cup play. This one will be competitive for sure, with a slight advantage to the U.S.

Prediction: Americans win 1-up

Next. Ryder Cup: Padraig Harrington Wise to Choose Ian Poulter. dark

Rory McIlroy/Ian Poulter vs. Patrick Cantlay/Xander Schauffele – The morning starts with a bang and finishes with one as well. McIlroy has not been great in Ryder Cup, but this pairing seems to be a good fit for him and the veteran Poulter. However, the opposition will be fierce. FedEx Cup winner Cantlay pairs with Olympic gold medalist Schauffele in another strong American pairing. This match could set the tone for the entire week – veterans vs. rookies. It’s a chance for each side to stake their claim to an early advantage.

Prediction: Americans win 2&1
