2021 Ryder Cup: Are We Seeing a New Bryson DeChambeau?
By Tim Letcher
Since changing his body and his game, Bryson DeChambeau has also seemed to change his personality. Whereas before DeChambeau was sort of a science nerd who played golf, the bigger, beefier Bryson seemed to want to insert himself into things that he would not have before.
But this week, at the Ryder Cup at Whistling Straits in Wisconsin, DeChambeau may be turning over a new leaf. So far this week, we have seen him doing things that make him likeable.

First, he has had at least one public conversation with nemesis Brooks Koepka (granted, Koepka initiated the conversation). That’s a start.
But on Thursday, DeChambeau was actually having fun with the crowd. He “called his shot” on a long drive off the first hole. He played to the crowd, getting the American gallery fired up. He shot t-shirts to the fans with a t-shirt gun.
This is a Bryson that everyone can get behind.
Maybe it’s just the fact that DeChambeau is wearing the red, white and blue. Maybe it’s American patriotism at its finest, rooting for a player who is hard to root for just because he’s on our team.
Or maybe, just maybe, DeChambeau is ready to turn over a new leaf. Perhaps he has realized that his actions and words over the last, say, 15 months have made him look like a jerk sometimes.
We won’t really know the answer to that question until after the Ryder Cup. If DeChambeau can continue to be fun Bryson, that would be great. But he could also revert back just as easily.
While we wait to see exactly which Bryson we have from here forward, it’s time to enjoy the Bryson that has shown up in Wisconsin this week. It’s time to get behind him and root for him. And maybe, just maybe, this is the beginning of a nicer, friendlier Bryson that everyone can get behind.
