Here’s a statement that might earn me the title of Captain Obvious, but it needs to be said. Sam Burns is the hottest golfer in the world right now.

Last week in Mississippi, Burns rallied to win at the Sanderson Farms Championship. It was the second win of his PGA Tour career.

Now, Burns is trying to become the first player since Brendon Todd in 2020 to win in consecutive starts on the PGA Tour (Todd won the 2020 Bermuda Championship, followed by the 2020 Mayakoba Golf Classic).

So far, so good for Burns this week in Las Vegas. He didn’t get off to a blazing fast start on Thursday, although it wasn’t bad. He birdied number one to start and added birdies at numbers six and seven to shoot a 3-under par 32 on his first nine.

Then on the back nine, Burns got things going. After three pars to open his back side, Burns birdied four in a row, at 13, 14, 15 and 16. He went from 3-under par to 7-under par in the span of four holes. He appeared to be on his way to a very good round.

However, he had one slip-up on his way in. He double bogeyed the par-3 17th hole and slipped back to 5-under par. That’s where he finished, shooting a 66. That left him five behind first-round leader Sung Kang.

On Friday, Burns again started with a birdie, this time on the 10th hole. He would also birdie the 15th and 16th holes to shoot a 3-under par 33 on his first nine.

Then on his second nine, Burns birdied the first and second holes to get to 5-under par. He also birdied the fourth and sixth holes to get to 7-under on his round. He would add a birdie on nine to finish at 8-under par. When he finished, Burns led by two shots.
