2021 CJ Cup: Justin Rose Doomed by Terrible Second Hole
By Tim Letcher
While Robert Streb was setting the course on fire early on Thursday at the CJ Cup, Justin Rose was not having the same kind of experience. In fact, Rose saw his round completely derailed by one particular hole.
His day got off to a seemingly benign start, as Rose, playing the first hole, hit his ball in the fairway, then hit the green in two. He lagged his putt close to the hole, then made a two-footer for par.

But on the par-3 second hole, things turned ugly very quickly. Rose hit his tee shot to the right of the green into the native area. He tried to play out of it but barely moved the ball with his second shot. He then elected to take a penalty and to get a drop.
His fourth shot got him back into an unplayable situation and he was forced to take another penalty and another drop. He was laying five on the par three at that point.
After his second drop, Rose would chip onto the green about three feet from the hole. He would make the putt to finish off his quadruple bogey seven. He was 4-over par through two holes.
Things did not get much better for Rose.
On the very next hole, the par-5 third, Rose drove his ball way right and, again, into the native area. He took another penalty, then was forced to play across the fairway with his third shot. His fourth got him on the green but his par putt from about 20 feet missed. He would make the bogey to and would drop to 5-over par through just two holes.
Rose did manage to birdie the par-4 fifth hole to get back to 4-over par. But he would close his first nine with a 5-over par 41.
Rose did manage to birdie three of his last five holes to close his round with a 3-over par 75. But his quadruple bogey on the second hole derailed his entire day.
