Jordan Spieth has worked his way into contention. He shot 66 on Thursday, then carded a 65 on Friday to get to 13-under par. He’s five shots back of Mitchell through two rounds.
Rickie Fowler finds himself in the mix this week. The former Players Championship winner has shot consecutive rounds of 66 and is 12-under par through 36 holes. He’s six shots behind Mitchell.
Tyrrell Hatton, searching for a second win on American soil, finds himself in the hunt. The European Ryder Cup participant shot 67 on Thursday, then came back with a 65 on Friday. He’s also 12-under par and six shots behind.
More standouts are a little further back.
Viktor Hovland, a European Ryder Cupper and one of the best young players in the world, is at 11-under par and tied for seventh place along with his Euro teammate Ian Poulter.
At 10-under par is a group that includes Paul Casey, Kevin Na, Cameron Smith and first-round leader Robert Streb. And at 9-under par, you will find red-hot Sam Burns, Sergio Garcia and Justin Thomas, among others.
As Mitchell hunts for that elusive second PGA Tour win, he will have plenty of competition. Among those chasing him are some of the biggest names, and the best players, in the world today. That will just make the win all the more satisfying if Mitchell is able to hang onto the lead.
