Brian Gay returns to his happy place this week. The veteran will be defending his title at this week’s Butterfield Bermuda Championship.

Gay was the surprise winner at Port Royal last season, seeming to come out of nowhere to claim the victory. He shot 70-68 the first two days to make the cut. Then his 67 on Saturday got him into a tie for fifth place with 18 holes to play.

On Sunday, Gay rallied with five birdies on his back nine, including one on the 18th hole, to shoot 64. It was good enough to get him into a playoff with Wyndham Clark.

On the first playoff hole, Gay did it again. He birdied the 18th hole for the second time in a matter of minutes and this time, it was enough to give him his first PGA Tour win since 2013.

Gay finished T3 in Bermuda in 2019. And while neither of those finishes may seem odd, they become more intriguing when you look at Gay’s last two seasons as a whole.

Last season, Gay played in 27 events on the PGA Tour. He made just nine cuts and had only one finish inside the Top 25. That was the win in Bermuda.

The previous season was basically the same for Gay.

In 2019-20, Gay made 23 starts on tour. He made 10 cuts and had four Top 25s. His T3 in Bermuda was his best finish.

Gay hopes to do something special in Bermuda again this year. He has made two starts so far this season on tour with poor results.

He opened his season by shooting 71-73 at the Sanderson Farms Championship. He missed the cut there.

In his last start, at the Shriners Children’s Open, Gay shot 68-68-72 before withdrawing. That’s two starts with no cuts made.

Gay is hoping for another tour victory before his 50th birthday in December. If it’s going to happen, this is the place. His happy place.
