Scottie Scheffler had a great opportunity to notch his first career PGA Tour victory Sunday at the HPE Houston Open, but a rough home stretch sunk his chances.

Scheffler was right in the thick of things as he made the final turn home at nine under par. Then bogies at 10, 11, and later 14 really put him in a tough spot. He tried to make a comeback by grabbing birdies on 16 and 18, but it wasn’t enough.

Scheffler finished his final round two under, with a final tournament score of -8. Ultimately he finished T2nd, two shots short of winner Jason Kokrak.

“I’ll take from this I felt I played a lot of good golf this week without really my best stuff” Scheffler said. “I really felt uncomfortable with my ball-striking going into this week, but I gave myself a chance to win here in the end, I put myself in a position on Sunday.”

Scheffler thought that he left a few shots on the green stating, “I’d say today I just probably didn’t make enough putts. Outside of that, I definitely played good enough to win.”

I’ll say Scottie! Scheffler broke the course record at Memorial Park in the second round, firing in an eight under 62. You don’t do that unless you have everything working for you. It’s just unfortunate that he couldn’t pay it off with a win.

The confidence on Scottie Scheffler is apparent. I’ll be the first to admit that I was skeptical when Steve Stricker picked him to be on the US Ryder Cup team. Well, as usual, I was wrong and he showed out with the rest of the Americans on the banks of Lake Michigan back in September.

Now our eyes move to when he’ll get that first win. He has back-to-back top 4 finishes in consecutive weeks at Mayakoba and Houston and has moved up to 12th in the FedEx Cup standings.

The first win is coming for the New Jersey native, when and where is the mystery. It wouldn’t shock me if it was to come in a major, he did finish T8th in two majors last year. Another run at a tournament title is just another building block for one of the up and coming American golfers.
